The village of Metamora, Indiana is home to the Whitewater Canal State Historic SiteThe original Duck Creek Crossing Village was settled in 1811 on the east bank of Duck Creek. A trading post, post office and tannery operated on the site. The coming of the Whitewater Canal in the mid-1800's meant the relocation of the trading post. In the 1890's T.C. Steele boarded in the nearby Henry Pond house, and the meadow used for the music festival parking provided subject matter for two of his paintings. All that remains of this early settlement are stone foundations in the stage and parking areas. In 1838 the current village of Metamora was platted by David Mount along the route of the proposed Whitewater Canal. The name was derived from a very popular stage play of the era. The Metamora Old Time Music Festival is a two day celebration of traditional music. It is organized by a group of volunteers, sponsored by Historic Metamora Inc., and supported by donations from various businesses and organizations in Metamora. |
